Dr. James Stone
Department Head and Professor, Civil and Environmental Engineering at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology

Jim Stone is a Professor of Environmental Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the South Dakota Schoolf Mines and Technology. He joined SD Mines after completing his Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering at Penn State. He has a BS in Civil Engineering and an MS in Environmental Engineering from Virginia Tech. Between his studies at Virginia Tech and Penn State, he was an enviornmental consultant for five years where he designed environmental remediation systems for water, wastewater, and hazardous waste applications. His research interests have focused on avariety of collaborative and interdisciplinary projects focusing on sustainability and the environment, including life cycle assessment (LCA) applications focused towards agricultural and environmental engineering processes, and fate and transport of contaminants from historical mine sites. In the classroom, he has taught a wide range of core and specialty environmental and sustainable engineering courses, and integrates active and problem-based learning approaches into all of his classes.

Dr. Craig Downing
Associate Dean of Lifelong Learning, Department Head and Professor, Engineering Management at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology

Craig Downing received his doctorate in Workforce Education and Development and MS in Manufacturing Systems from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. Dr. Downing has more than 12 years of experience teaching Manufacturing, Management, and Mathematics at the post-secondary level. Additionally, he has amassed 10 years of industrial experience, four years as a Process Engineer and six years as a private consultant for organizations such as Lockheed Martin/NASA, Parker Hannifin, and Crain Enterprises. His interests are rooted in Industrial-Academic relationships, Quality Management System Development, and Production/Operations Management. He has multiple publications/presentations related to his areas of interest and continually explores new research opportunities related to Quality and Operations Management.

Ashley Sowa, MLIS
User Services Librarian

Ashley Sowa is a digital platform trainer on McGraw-Hill's User Services team. She has served as a STEM librarian at a variety of institutions, including at an academic engineering library, a corporate R&D center library, and a public library. Ashley earned her MLIS from University of Pittsburgh and has a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry.
