Craig Deegan
Author and Professor of Accounting at the University of Tasmania

Craig Deegan has been teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels for nearly thirty years, and before embarking on his distinguished academic career, practised as a chartered accountant. Craig is a Fellow of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, and was, for approximately a decade, a member of the judging panel of the Australasian Sustainability Reporting Awards.

Craig is currently on the editorial boards of several academic accounting journals and is a former Chairperson of the Triple Bottom Line Issues Group of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand. For many years he assisted in the development of the CPA Program, Australia, with a notable contribution to the Ethics and Governance Module.

Craig’s expertise is frequently sought by corporations, government and industry bodies on issues pertaining to financial accounting, corporate social and environmental accountability, and ethics. A key tenet of his work, and reflected in his own high standard of professional ethics, is that businesses have responsibilities to a broader group of stakeholders, beyond their shareholders, for their social and environmental performance, as well as their financial performance.
