Sustainability is a major issue that has engaged the entire world. Many are concerned about climate change and the role of greenhouse gas emissions. They are seeking ways to minimize their carbon footprints. The new paradigm of sustainability as it applies to engineering innovation has three essential legs: energy efficiency, renewable energy, and energy storage, all of which work together to create more sustainable environmental conditions. With renewable energy and energy efficiency becoming increasingly relevant to the competitiveness of companies worldwide, engineering is changing to meet evolving needs. Standing at the forefront of this challenge of decreasing greenhouse gas and combatting global warming, engineering professionals also have a responsibility to the public, environment, community, and individuals. Over the last few decades, engineers have been a driving force behind achievements in the increased use of renewable energy, efficiencies in the applications of renewable energy, energy efficiency measures, and cost reductions in solar, photovoltaic (PV), wind, and energy storage technologies (i.e., batteries). Many engineering colleges are aware of this need and are teaching courses that focus on the application of renewable energy and promotion of energy-efficient solutions. Engineers will be a part of the team that promotes and spreads the practice of energy efficiency and renewable energy worldwide.
