In this webinar, Dr. Jonathan Kibble will provide examples of how to evolve from traditional lecture-based teaching to a blended active learning approach. In recent studies, Dr. Kibble and colleagues reported on sharply declining lecture attendance, and the lack of relationship between in-person attendance and performance on medical knowledge examinations 1,2. Learning goals are now changing towards greater emphasis on critical thinking and problem solving rather than just showing knowledge. They are concerned that lack of engagement with faculty and peers may harm professional identity formation in learners and they are working on including more authentic learning sessions to motivate and engage students.

In this webinar, he will first very briefly discuss some evidence supporting the inclusion of active learning methods in his curricula. He will then show examples of how he is trying to align his teaching and assessment methods to support real-world applications and problem solving. Of course, the basic answer to the question in his title is that there is no one best way to teach physiology! This is a work in progress for everyone, and he hopes the webinar will offer some ideas and will stimulate ongoing dialogue.
